Elon Musk, the notable CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has recently stirred controversy by reinstating Alex Jones, a widely recognized conspiracy theorist, on the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. This move was celebrated with a panel discussion held in an X Spaces conversation on Sunday. The panel, hosted by Mario Nawful, included contentious figures such as Andrew Tate, who is currently facing serious legal charges; Vivek Ramaswamy, a divisive Republican presidential hopeful; Mike Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser with a tarnished reputation; and other figures known for their problematic stances.
Musk's decision followed a user poll on X, concluding at midnight on Saturday, where a majority voted in favor of Jones' reinstatement. Jones, infamous for his incendiary rhetoric, was permanently banned from the platform in 2018 following a series of incidents that culminated in a heated confrontation with CNN journalist Oliver Darcy.
During the nearly three-hour session, the participants, unsurprisingly, delved into their preferred controversial topics. Musk himself advocated for increased birth rates, a view he has expressed previously, citing concerns over potential civilizational decline. Jones focused on theories about “globalists”, while others, including Rep. Mike Gaetz and far-right figure Jack Posobiec, lauded Musk and celebrated Jones' return to X. In a notable moment, Musk prompted Jones to discuss his infamous Sandy Hook conspiracy theory, which Jones had falsely propagated but now claims to believe was a real event.
Despite Musk's assertion that the platform would act against unlawful statements, his recent actions in reinstating figures known for extremist and conspiratorial views have raised concerns. These decisions, coupled with his own controversial remarks, have led to a significant drop in advertiser support on X. Speaking at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit, Musk responded defiantly to the advertisers' withdrawal, illustrating the ongoing tension between his management style and the broader business community.
